Break the Boundary

I am trying to break the boundary – to transform a traditional two-dimensional photograph works into a three-dimensional works. Moreover, I will attach some imagery item to every individual photography works so as to create influence to the photography itself. Additionally, in this work, I attempt to use one item to map out a two-dimensional photography, and in order to have an effect of breaking the boundary of dimensional limitation in photography. Yet, the problem of elections of item as well as photography are on a conceptual level.

All of the photos are shot under a lunar module, which implicate people in nowadays used to be trapped in the circumstances that made by themselves. More, the photography indicates that designers may be blockaded in their past works subconsciously.

The three items that I have chose is hammer, lollipop, and sickle. They respectively indicate three diverse methods to break the boundary.

Hammer implies authority. That is to say, the power to break the boundary can be all around. More specifically, we can break the limitation through the power of reform. As for design, it is the emergence of new trend, or a creation of new technology.

While lollipop representatives the new possibility. As we younger generations are growing with absorbing new ideas and new concepts, so we will introduce the new ideas to replace the old one. Like the process of metabolism, good ideas will be passed down, yet, the obsolete concepts will be eliminated. The rule also largely utilizes in design.

Sickle indicates public opinions as well as the publics. However, it has dual character in boundary-breaking. On the one hand, it can be an assisting power to accelerate breaking through the wall. On the other hand, it may become a hinder to aggravate the dilemma. Hence, it depends on how good we can utilize the power of sickle. As design can have great effect on people passed down generations, people can make their influence on works design.

There are different colors enclose to hammer, lollipop, and sickle; they are green, red and blue respectively. The green hammer representatives safe, hope and peace, with the wish of no authority abusing. The red lollipop implies the passion and lively future. And the blue sickle is to hope that we can hope the balance between public opinion and the publics, so as to create a stable society, without any malicious manipulation. The reason that I choose these three colors is owing to the fact that they are the primary colours that can mix and crate all other colours. Thus, there is no boundary among them, the limitation and boundary are crashed to pieces.

CCDN 331 P4 Written Manifesto

The manifesto I want to show in this project is ‘Break the Boundary’, this line give me lots of inspirations. The purpose of Design is figure out problems. But before that, we need to break the original cognitive mode or we cannot solve the problem well. I quote from Albert Einstein: “We can’t solve the problem by using the same kind of thinking we used when we create them”(Before Incarceration  (2010)). The other advantage of “Break the Boundary” is we can and we will acquire a lot of special work. Denis Diderot who is a 18th century art critic for the concept of the fourth wall (Stevenson  (1995)), after that, plenty of art form such as dramas, films, novels try to break the fourth wall and bring audiences a new experience. It becomes one of the most unique dramatic skills. The comic book called ‘Deadpool kills Marvel Universe’ is talking about the character Deadpool found he is just a fictional character; the truth drove him to despair. In the end he kills the entire Marvel Universe and break the fourth wall massacre the Marvel Company (Bunn, Talajic and Loughridge, n.d.). This is a really classic comic story and it shows us the result of break the fourth wall. “Break the Boundary” is a very interesting manifesto, therefore in this project I wish I can break some boundaries and bring some interesting work.

Pervasive games and design –‘need’ and ‘desire’ the twin evils of design

Pervasive games and design –‘need’ and ‘desire’ the twin evils of design

The appear of design is because people want to figure out some problem, when people have ‘need’ and ‘desire’, design following. But most of the time people do not know they have this or that kind of ‘need’ and ‘desire’, until they saw a design, they suddenly find out what they want.

Heskett, J. (2005). Design: A very short introduction (Vol. 136). Oxford University Press.

The writer shows us how our life style change our way of thinking design, from the spoon we are using, when we drive home or even the medical facility can save our lives, all of them are inseparable from the design. Meanwhile, it also reflects design will change because different place and different culture and the viewpoint of design from the major company.

McGonigal, J. (2011). Reality is broken: Why games make us better and how they can change the world. Penguin.

Gamification can make up the lacking and shortage of real world; gamification can make our life better. Plenty of examples tell us how to apply gamification to solve the real world problems. In the future, we can make our life as awesome as game. Gamification can help us change other people lives even solve the energy efficiency.

331 P2 Critical Perspective

In this project, I use a rabbit fairy to represent all my good wishes and good memories about the city. This white rabbit fairy also mean freedom, she live without any restrict, she free access around the city, she is always happy every day, just like a child, the city is her playground. She enjoys her life, she observes the city, and she is living with curiosity. The reason why I create a rabbit fairy is because people are too busy to live, too busy to study to study, too busy to twitter or instagram their lives to other strangers. We never learn the joy and peace of free time to just be alive, but I hope this rabbit learned.

Meanwhile, I want to talk about a book. Few decades ago, an Italian writer Italo Calvino creates a great book called ‘Invisible Cities’ --- Marco Polo who is a famous businessman, world traveler and writer described the scene of 55 cities to a great emperor Kublai Khan. In the story, history and truth was interweaved with fiction. The author applies his imagination to created 55 cities and they are so different. Some of the books bring us to see other people’s world, but the other bring us to our own world. Each time, when the book describes a city to me, my mind will separate the city, and let the pieces exchange, remove or convert, use another way to recombine the city --- It become my city.

A Free Spirit

I want to show a free spirit who live in the city without restrict, this place just like her playground.

I chose Polaroid to finish this project because it is more truly, and make me fell more freely. The photos of Vincent Dixon (http://vincentdixon.com/) are absorbing; he is good at adding some special elements to change the style of those photos. The relation between Vincent’s work and mine is we both applying different way to observe this world, we both hope our lives can be far more interesting.
